Design & Engineering
Key Features
What sets the NDS Mini Channel apart from competing residential trench drain systems.
Patented Flying Buttress Design
Structural support on both sides and underneath the channel prevents deflection under load and during concrete encasement. Bottom flanges anchor for straight installation with minimal floating.
Honeycomb Walls
Patented honeycomb wall construction minimizes material weight while maintaining high rigidity and crush resistance.
UV & Chemical Resistant
UV inhibitors prevent fading and cracking from sun exposure. Resistant to common chemicals, road salt, and pool chemicals.
Rustproof & Maintenance-Free
HDPE construction eliminates corrosion. Stainless steel grate screws further reduce long-term maintenance requirements.
Where to Use It
Recommended Applications
The NDS Mini Channel is designed for light-duty surface drainage in residential and light-commercial settings. Not recommended for heavy vehicular traffic — see NDS Pro Series or Dura Slope for higher load requirements.
Patios
Collect and divert stormwater away from patio surfaces, preventing pooling and reducing slip hazards in outdoor living areas.
Pool Decks
Manage splash-out and rainwater on pool surrounds. Chemical-resistant HDPE withstands prolonged exposure to chlorinated water.
Tennis & Sport Courts
Maintain dry, safe playing surfaces by intercepting runoff at court edges. Class B-rated grates support maintenance vehicle traffic.
Spas & Hot Tubs
Control overflow and condensation drainage around spa installations, keeping surrounding hardscape safe and dry.
Decks & Walkways
Intercept surface water at deck transitions and doorway thresholds to prevent moisture intrusion into structures.
Residential Hardscapes
Versatile enough for general use across residential driveways (light traffic), sidewalks, garden borders, and outdoor kitchens.
Customization
Grate Options & Colors
Mix and match from 6 standard colors, 2 decorative patterns, and 3 metal finishes to complement any hardscape design.
A high-level look at the installation process. Refer to the NDS CAD details linked below for application-specific instructions.
Excavate the trench to required depth and width, accounting for concrete encasement per load-class requirements.
Set channel in place using 6″ stakes or rebar secured with tie wire. Position top 1/8″ below finished surface edge.
Connect sections using couplings (#548). Apply PVC solvent weld cement for a watertight seal.
Install end fittings — end caps (#547) to close the run, spigot outlets or bottom outlet sections (#550) for discharge piping.
Encase in concrete per the applicable NDS installation detail for your traffic class.
Install grates once concrete has cured. Seat into molded grooves, secure with 4 stainless steel screws per grate. Leave 1/8″ expansion gap between grates.
Alternative rebar installation method — secure channel flanges to ½″–5/8″ rebar with tie wire.
Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers drawn from our team's direct experience specifying and selling the NDS Mini Channel system.
The standard Mini Channel drain body (NDS #500) is available in 6-foot sections and can be cut to any length with a miter saw. A 3-foot section with a 2″ bottom spigot outlet (#550) is also available for runs where you need to drain water downward through the bottom of the channel. Grates are sold in 3-foot sections, so each 6-foot channel requires two grates.
No. The Mini Channel is a modular system — the channel body ships alone. For each channel section, you will need to order: two channel grates, one fitting for each end (end cap or spigot end outlet), and grate screws (4 per grate, sold in 50-count packs). This lets you configure each run exactly as your project requires.
Load ratings depend on the grate you select. Iron and injection-molded HDPE grates carry a Class B rating — suitable for automobiles, light trucks, and medium-duty pneumatic tires up to 175 PSI at speeds under 20 mph. Brass grates carry a Class A rating — pedestrian traffic, bicycles, and wheelchairs up to 60 PSI. See our Load Rating Recommendation Guide for details.
Two options: through the end of the channel using a spigot end outlet adapter for 2″ pipe, or through the bottom using the dedicated 3-foot bottom outlet section (NDS #550). Both connect to standard 2″ Schedule 40 PVC pipe.
Yes. NDS manufactures prefabricated 45° elbows, 90° elbows, and tees — each sold with an integrated grate. You can also cut custom angles with a miter saw. Glue the cut pieces together and secure the joint before encasing it in concrete.
Channel-to-channel connections use Mini Channel couplings (#548). Apply PVC solvent weld cement (standard PVC glue) to create a watertight bond — the same process used for gluing PVC pipe and fittings.
The Mini Channel holds approximately the same volume of water as a 3″ diameter pipe of equivalent length. For projects requiring greater flow capacity, consider the NDS Pro Series (available in 3″, 5″, 8″, and 12″ widths).
Grates seat into molded grooves along the top of the channel body. Each grate requires four stainless steel Phillips head screws (#4 × 5/8″), sold separately in 50-count packs. The stainless steel construction minimizes long-term maintenance.

Other Trench Drain Product Lines
Different projects call for different systems. Here's how the Mini Channel compares to other trench drain lines we carry — and when you might want to consider an alternative.
NDS
Pro Series Channel Drain
The workhorse of NDS trench drains. Available in 3″, 5″, 8″, and 12″ widths with polypropylene construction. Snap-together male-to-female locking clips, integrated rebar clips, 8 outlet options per section, and Qwik-Turn radius couplings for curved layouts. Choose this over Mini Channel when you need higher flow capacity, wider channels, or Class C/D load ratings for vehicular traffic.
3″ – 12″ WidthsPolypropyleneUp to Class DSnap Couplings
NDS's pre-sloped trench drain system with a built-in 0.7% gradient that eliminates the need to grade the trench bed manually. HDPE construction with the ProFit grate locking system and DuraLoc tongue-and-groove joints. Ideal for loading docks, parking lots, running tracks, and any application requiring engineered slope and up to Class D load handling.
The newest residential channel from NDS, blending Mini Channel durability with Micro Channel-style internal couplings. Narrower 2-1/4″ profile makes it less visually intrusive. Snap-in grates simplify maintenance. Best suited for pedestrian-only applications where a minimal footprint matters — walkways, amusement parks, and decorative hardscapes.
The original NDS residential channel drain and direct predecessor to the Mini Channel. A proven, cost-effective system for general residential drainage. If you're comparing the two, the Mini Channel offers a larger surface area and more grate options, while the Spee-D Channel has its own established accessory ecosystem.
