Getting Started
Installation Overview
A high-level look at the installation process. Refer to the NDS CAD details linked below for application-specific instructions.
- Excavate the trench to required depth and width, accounting for concrete encasement per load-class requirements.
- Set channel in place using 6″ installation stakes or rebar secured with tie wire. Position top 1/8″ below finished surface edge.
- Connect sections using couplings (#248) or strainer couplings (#245). Apply PVC solvent weld cement for a watertight seal.
- Install end fittings — end caps (#247) to close the run, spigot end outlets (#246), offset outlets (#249), or bottom outlet sections (#234) for discharge piping.
- Encase in concrete per the applicable NDS installation detail for your traffic class.
- Install grates once concrete has cured. Seat into molded grooves, secure with 4 stainless steel screws per grate. Leave 1/8″ expansion gap between grates.

The NDS Spee-D Channel (#400) is available in 4-foot and 10-foot sections and can be cut to any length with a miter saw. A 2-foot section with a bottom spigot outlet (#234) is also available for runs requiring downward discharge. Grates are sold in 2-foot sections — two are required per 4-foot channel. No. The Spee-D Channel is a modular system — the channel body ships alone. For each 4-foot channel section, you will need to order: two channel grates, one fitting for each end (end cap or spigot end outlet), and 8 grate screws (4 per grate, sold in 50-count packs). This lets you configure each run exactly as your project requires.
Load ratings depend on the grate you select. The Spee-D channel drain body is rated for up to Class B loads, while some grates may only be suitable for Class A workloads; please see individual product descriptions for accurate load ratings. Cast iron grates carry a Class C rating for heavier vehicular traffic. See our Load Rating Recommendation Guide for information on what each load class means.
Three options: through the end of the channel using a 2″ spigot end outlet (#246) for Schedule 40 PVC, through the end using the 3″ & 4″ offset end outlet (#249) for sewer & drain pipe, or through the bottom using the dedicated 2-foot bottom outlet section (#234) which fits 3″ or 4″ S&D fittings and includes a pre-inserted atrium grate to prevent debris from entering discharge pipes.
Yes — the Spee-D Channel has the most comprehensive set of directional fittings of any NDS residential channel. NDS manufactures prefabricated 45° elbows, 90° elbows, tees, and crosses — each sold with an integrated grate. You can also cut custom angles with a miter saw. For smooth curves, the new Spee-D Contour articulating channel allows 0–9° of deflection per section to follow curved hardscapes without cutting.
Channel-to-channel connections use either the standard coupling (#248) or the strainer coupling (#245), which includes a built-in debris filter to catch leaves before they enter outlet pipes. Apply PVC solvent weld cement for a watertight bond — the same process used for gluing PVC pipe and fittings.
The Spee-D Channel handles 94.3 GPM at 1% slope — approximately equivalent to a 4″ diameter pipe of equivalent length. Grate flow rates range from 23.70 to 59.04 GPM per linear foot depending on grate type. For projects requiring greater flow capacity, consider the NDS Pro Series (available in 3″, 5″, 8″, and 12″ widths).

Choose the Mini Channel when a narrower profile is preferred and Class A–B ratings are sufficient; choose the Spee-D when you need more flow capacity, more fitting options, or curved layouts.
