Airside pavement is the most demanding drainage environment most engineers will ever spec: extreme wheel loads, zero tolerance for loose hardware, fuel and deicing fluid in the runoff, and no room for ponding on an active apron. Trench systems here are chosen grate-first — and every grate has to lock down.
What airport drainage has to survive
- Extreme, repeated wheel loads. Aircraft, fuel trucks, and ground support equipment concentrate enormous loads on small contact patches. Our load scale tops out at Class F precisely for runway, taxiway, and apron duty; airport freight and service areas commonly spec Class D and up.
- FOD discipline. A grate that can rattle loose is foreign object debris waiting to happen. Airside grates need positive mechanical lockdown — bolted or boltless-locking, with tamper-resistant hardware where the public or contractors have access.
- Contaminated runoff. Fuel spill zones and winter deicing pads generate runoff that must be intercepted and routed for treatment, not sheeted into the storm system. Trench runs are how aprons and pads capture it at the source; confirm containment and treatment requirements with your airport authority and environmental engineer.
- Landside is a different spec. Terminal curbside, parking structures, and access roads carry buses and passenger vehicles — heavy, but a different class than airside. One project usually needs two or three distinct specs.
Start with load class
The Load Class Recommendation Guide maps the full A–F scale: Class C–D covers H-20 truck and forklift duty for landside and cargo areas, Class E covers port-and-rail-grade loading, and Class F is the maximum-load rating used for runways, taxiways, aprons, and military airfields. Spec each run to the heaviest vehicle that will ever cross it — on an airfield that is rarely the everyday vehicle.

Ductile Iron Replacement Grates
Aging trench runs often need grates before they need new channel. Our metal grates catalog includes ductile iron, cast iron, and steel replacements; send dimensions and the required load class and we will match a grate to the existing frame. Heavy municipal-style castings from EJ, U.S. Foundry, and ABT are also available on request through our quote desk.

Aprons and pads are large, flat catchments — flow adds up fast.
