Brewery floors take a beating that most commercial slabs never see: near-boiling kettle and CIP discharge, caustic and acid wash-down every day, and keg carts and forklifts rolling over the same trench line. Here is how to spec a drain system that keeps up — and who to call for a same-day quote.

Why brewery floors fail without real trench drainage

Ask any head brewer what they would change about their building and floor drainage is usually near the top of the list. The common failure patterns we hear from breweries:

  • Point drains on a flat slab. A single round drain in the middle of the brewhouse leaves standing water everywhere the slope does not reach. Hoses push wort, trub, and rinse water across the floor all day; a continuous trench run collects it along the whole work zone instead of at one low spot.
  • Hot-side discharge. Kettle, whirlpool, and CIP cycles send very hot water and cleaning chemistry to the floor. Light plastic channels and unsealed slab joints degrade fast under that kind of daily thermal and chemical cycling.
  • Undersized channels. A brew day can dump hundreds of gallons in minutes. If the channel and outlet cannot keep pace, the floor floods exactly when the crew is busiest.
  • The wrong grates. Grates that rust, bounce loose under keg carts, or trap heels in a public taproom become a maintenance and liability problem. Slip-resistant, cleanable grates matter as much as the channel under them.
  • Trapped odors. Wort residue and beer in a channel that does not drain clean will announce itself in the taproom. Outlet accessories such as ACO's foul air trap for its catch basins help keep odors out of guest areas.

Load class: match the drain to the traffic over it

Every channel-and-grate combination carries a load rating, and a brewery spans several of them in one building. Our Load Class Recommendation Guide covers the full A–F scale; for breweries the short version is:

  • Taproom and tasting areas — pedestrian traffic only: Class A or Class B.
  • Brewhouse, cellar, and packaging — pallet jacks and pneumatic-tire forklifts: Class C, which meets the AASHTO H-20 standard.
  • Keg cooler, loading, and delivery aprons — hard-tire forklifts and box trucks: Class C to Class D depending on equipment.

The channel body and the grate both have to carry the rating, so the same 4-inch channel can serve the taproom with a decorative grate and the cellar with a ductile iron one — one system, two grate specs.

Planning notes before you pour

  • Slope everything to the trench. A trench drain only works if the finished floor sheds toward it — coordinate channel layout with the slab design, not after it.
  • Check discharge rules early. Many municipalities regulate the temperature and pH of what a brewery sends to the sewer. Your local authority may require tempering or pretreatment downstream of the trench — settle that before locking outlet locations.
