Yards, sally ports, showers, kitchens and service areas need different drainage. Compare water streams, approved outlets, loads, grate openings and maintenance access, then confirm the exact security and clinical requirements for each zone.

Inside the fence, every yard and room drains differently

A compact county jail may have a rooftop recreation deck and a basement vehicle bay; a larger prison may include housing yards, a kitchen, laundry, clinic, workshops and a perimeter road. Map these as separate drainage zones. Record who can reach each drain, what enters it, where it discharges, and how staff will inspect and clean it during normal operations and an emergency.

Security, drainage and service access must work together. A retained grate still needs an anchored frame, a maintainable outlet and a safe floor connection. Bolt-down, tamper-resistant and ligature-resistant describe different features. None, by itself, certifies a drain for every jail, cell or behavioral-health room. Facility security and clinical teams should identify the risks and accept the exact assembly and maintenance procedure.

Coordinate collection with security and site systems

Surface runoff: a channel or trench drain intercepts flow along a line; a catch basin collects at a graded low point. Either can work in a yard. Compare grading, capture, opening locations, accessible routes and cleanout access before selecting the layout. Roof and elevated recreation-deck drainage also require their own waterproofing, roof-drain or scupper connections and overflow design.

Subsurface water: French drains collect water within soil rather than replacing surface inlets. NDS EZflow is a gravel-free manufacturer option; confirm supply and configuration. Soil permeability, filters, outlet elevation and effects on foundations and fence posts govern whether subsurface drainage is appropriate.

Secure perimeter crossings: coordinate culverts, pipes and access structures with the facility’s physical-security design. A perimeter barrier may affect debris accumulation, hydraulic losses and maintenance access. Load-rated catalog grates do not establish compliance with an engineered perimeter-barrier requirement.

Wastewater and spills: keep sanitary fixtures, kitchen grease, laundry discharge and vehicle or shop washwater identified separately from stormwater. Document approved destinations, required pretreatment and isolation of spill areas. The catalog lists ACO Oleopator oil-water separation and Spill Control products. Match free-oil separation, solids, flow and cleaning chemistry to the selected unit; emulsified oil or dissolved contaminants can require other treatment. A separator is not permission to discharge. EPA’s motor-vehicle waste guidance describes sewer-authority coordination, holding tanks and dry-shop alternatives, and the restrictions on underground disposal of vehicle-maintenance waste.

Interior secure plumbing: choose cell, shower and clinical drains under the room’s plumbing, security and infection-prevention requirements. Josam’s wider range includes a 30000-PD prison security floor-drain body; its security-body designation is not a ligature-resistance certification. Confirm the top assembly, fasteners, waterproofing, trap, vent and service access as a complete specification.

How water moves across a secure yard, and how to prove the line carries it

Start with tributary area. Include roofs and uphill paving only where they actually drain into the yard. For an illustrative volume calculation with no infiltration or other losses, 1,000 sq ft × 1/12 ft × 7.4805 gal/cu ft = approximately 623 gallons per inch of rain. A hypothetical 150′ × 250′ paved yard therefore receives about 23,400 gallons in one inch of rain, or 46,800 gallons in two inches. For design flow, use the locally accepted storm frequency and rainfall intensity for the applicable duration, tributary area, runoff assumptions and time of concentration. Indoor fixture flows and simultaneous equipment dumps require a separate plumbing calculation. Use actual nozzle and equipment data; account for simultaneous washdown or flushing only where the approved layout sends that water to the same drain.

Check the entire flow path: inlet capture and bypass, grate blockage, channel slope and depth, outlet entrance losses, pipe roughness and diameter, downstream hydraulic grade and tailwater. A large channel can still surcharge through a restricted outlet. The FHWA HEC-22 storm-drainage manual provides methods for runoff, inlets and conveyance; apply project criteria and manufacturer data. Nominal pipe diameter alone does not establish a GPM limit.

Grade paving to collect water without exceeding applicable accessible-route or shower-floor limits. Set channel slope and sediment-management measures for actual flows and debris; a fixed velocity does not guarantee that every type of grit remains suspended. At depressed bays, check gravity outlet levels early. Where pumping is necessary, evaluate storage, alarms, backup arrangements and a controlled overflow route for the consequences of pump failure.

Design for escorted maintenance. Place cleanouts and sumps where authorized crews can reach them, with safe grate lifting and tool control. Size usable sediment storage from expected debris and inspection findings rather than promising a fixed number of months between cleanings. Set an initial inspection schedule, inspect after significant storms, and adjust from observations. Verify that any basket fits the selected basin and frame and leaves enough hydraulic capacity as it fills.

Load class follows the complete assembly and actual traffic

The EN 1433 classes below describe standardized test forces and installation groups; they are not vehicle-weight limits or a test-to-failure ranking. Specify the applicable standard, wheel loads, tire contact, crossing speed, frequency, turning and braking. The channel, grate, frame, anchorage, concrete support, surrounding pavement and substrate must work as the documented installation.

NDS letter classes use separate pressure and traffic guidance: NDS Class D does not establish EN 1433 D400. H-20, HS-25 and AASHTO M306 also require their own applicable documentation. Include transport buses, delivery trucks, emergency vehicles, forklifts and maintenance equipment that may actually cross a drain. A patrol road is not automatically one class, and a pedestrian location needs reassessment if vehicles can enter it. ACO’s PowerDrain documentation, for example, separates grate choices and installation details; its highest published grate class does not rate every possible site installation.

Zone by zone: where the drains actually go

Recreation yards & housing unit yards

A perimeter channel can intercept sheet flow while keeping openings away from play areas; point inlets may be preferable where the floor can grade to controlled low points. Turf areas may need surface collection, soil improvement or subsurface drainage. Review sports use, footwear, wheel access, removable components and sediment without treating a pedestrian or heel-safe label as security approval.

Sally ports, vehicle traps & transport bays

Determine whether the bay is actually depressed and whether stormwater, vehicle drips and cleaning water share a collection point. Locate drains clear of gate tracks where practical and coordinate slab joints, invert levels, traffic loads and the approved outlet. Security hardware must remain serviceable under the facility’s access procedure.

Perimeter patrol road, clear zone & fence line

Intercept runoff before it erodes road shoulders or fence foundations. Compare swales, culverts, cross drains and sediment basins against terrain, vehicle access and perimeter-security restrictions. Provide cleanout access at collection and barrier locations, protect outfalls against erosion, and select load classes from actual traffic rather than the road’s name.

Intake, booking apron & visitor entry

Where accessible floor or ground-surface requirements apply, ADA §302.3 limits openings to those that do not pass a sphere over 1/2 inch and places elongated openings perpendicular to the dominant travel direction. Also check stability, slip resistance and changes in level. The security assessment governs retention even in staffed areas; observation does not automatically make a clip or lock bar sufficient.

Cells, communal showers & clinical rooms

First decide whether the room needs floor drainage and how it will be cleaned. In showers, coordinate simultaneous fixture flows, hair capture, the waterproofing connection, trap-seal maintenance and floor slopes with access for cleaning. The catalog includes ACO ShowerChannel and ShowerPoint products, but their shower application does not establish detention or ligature suitability. A clinical room requires its own infection-prevention and risk assessment; a general site trench is not the default.

Kitchen, laundry & service rooms

Review listed ACO sanitary channels, FloorDrain, BoxDrain and floor sinks for washdown, point collection or indirect-waste reception. Kitchen design must coordinate food solids, required grease interception and equipment air gaps or other code-required connections; a floor drain is not a grease interceptor. Laundry design needs actual machine dump rates, lint handling and temperature/chemical limits. Apply the adopted plumbing and food-service rules: the FDA Food Code is a model for adoption, not a blanket federal installation specification for every institutional kitchen.

Industries, vocational shops, fleet garage & wash bay

Separate cleaning water, free oil, solvents and concentrated chemical spills according to their approved treatment or disposal paths. A dry shop or isolated collection tank may be preferable to a connected floor drain. Select any oil-water separator for the exact stream, treatment rate and maintenance access; detergent-emulsified oils and dissolved solvents are not automatically removed. Keep these wastes out of stormwater infiltration systems.

Accessibility applies beyond the visitor entrance

For state and local public facilities, DOJ Title II §§35.151(k) and 35.152 address detention construction, alterations and program access, including medical and long-term-care areas. Determine required accessible cells, showers and routes under the applicable scoping provisions. Covered federal facilities use ABA and agency requirements. Confirm state/local codes and facility-specific standards; neither security status nor a product’s ADA marketing label determines the project’s full obligations.

What “secured grate” actually means

Specify the fastening mechanism and intended performance rather than a generic “lockable” label. Retention for traffic, resistance to unauthorized removal and reduction of ligature attachment opportunities need separate review. The following are hardware descriptions, not ascending security certifications.

  1. Weight alone: a heavy grate has no positive attachment. Use the facility-approved fixing and lifting arrangement.
  2. Clips and proprietary retainers: the listed NDS 849 clip and DS-122 ProFit lock belong to specific systems. Their names do not certify them for inmate-accessible areas or for every grate/frame configuration.
  3. Bars and boltless locks: the Josam Lite Line bar kit and ACO QuickLok are different mechanisms. QuickLok uses a grate stud that push-fits into a spring clip on a bar; it is designed for removal and is not a keyed security lock.
  4. Bolts and tamper-resistant heads: ordinary bolts positively fasten compatible parts; special heads add a tool requirement. Listed examples include Filcoten Boltmax and PowerDrain’s matching four-bolt grates. Confirm approved hardware and tool custody without claiming that either system cannot be defeated.

Agree how staff will obtain tools, isolate a work area, remove accumulated material, inspect concealed spaces and reinstall every fastener. Retain spare approved hardware and record inspection of frames, anchors and fixings. Do not downgrade the security requirement merely to reduce cleanout time, and do not assume a bolt makes frame anchorage unnecessary.

For a documented ligature-focused alternative outside the listed site-drain range, Whitehall BestCare WHFDV incorporates an internal grate baffle/gusset arrangement and a vinyl-floor clamping connection. This addresses a different need from a bolt-down exterior grate. Review its limited inlet area, plumbing connection, floor system and risk documentation with the clinical/security team. Manufacturer ligature-resistant design does not eliminate risk or replace assessment and supervision; supply through Drainage Connect is unconfirmed.

These are candidates for different duties, not a ranking. Confirm the exact submittal, discharge route, security acceptance and maintenance access before ordering. Catalog listing does not establish stock, lead time or project approval.

Heavy vehicle areas with a bolted option — ACO PowerDrain

The 4-inch, 8-inch and 12-inch nominal internal widths provide alternatives for traffic areas; width does not determine apron capacity. ACO documents matching tamper-resistant bolt 138127 and driver 138128 for its four-bolt option. Check openings as well as fastening: the S100K 99590 grate has 0.71-inch-wide slots, exceeding the 1/2-inch accessible-surface limit. Do not transfer an ADA claim from a different PowerDrain grate. General exterior collection with removable grates — ACO KlassikDrain

K100/KS100 · K200/KS200 · K300/KS300 · grate-dependent retention

Compare K100/KS100, K200/KS200 and K300/KS300 for yard edges, entries or service areas where their documented loads and fastening satisfy the project. KS stainless edge rails do not make the polymer-concrete body a sanitary stainless drain or automatically improve its traffic rating. For tight layouts, MiniKlassik K50 is a narrower alternative; ACO states that EN 1433 does not cover grates for this 50 mm internal-width drain and uses the standard’s test guidelines. Confirm the exact published rating and installation.

HPC channels with matched locking options — BG Filcoten

TEC V 100 · PRO V 200 · PRO V 300 · configuration-specific fixings

Compare the listed TEC V 100, PRO V 200 and PRO V 300 high-performance concrete channels against the required hydraulics, support and exposure. Listed 100 and 200 anti-vandalism devices are not universal: BG excludes slotted and COMBee grates from that optional lock arrangement. Match the 300 fixing or Boltmax option to its documented grate and rail; neither its name nor an E-class grate establishes detention approval.

Point collection and sediment access — catch basins

12″ · 18″ · 24″ · usable sump volume and compatible accessories

Listed 12-inch, 18-inch and 24-inch basins offer point collection and service access. Size the usable sump below the outlet, opening and maintenance equipment together; nominal width does not set a cleanout interval. Match kits, risers and outlet adapters to the selected assembly. A metal grate alone does not make a plastic basin traffic-rated. Keep raised atrium grates out of travel surfaces and review their exposed shape for security concerns. A pop-up emitter needs a permitted, erosion-controlled discharge point; a dry well needs suitable soils, separation distances, groundwater conditions and approval. Neither solves an unapproved wastewater discharge.

Pre-sloped exterior runs — NDS Dura Slope

HDPE channel · section sequence and frame version matter

Check excavation depth, concrete support, selected grate and outlet geometry before using Dura Slope in a retrofit. The 2026–2027 NDS catalog identifies DS-200H for its Class D configuration and limits that duty to speeds below 20 mph; manufacturer web guidance also uses DS-200 and DS-225 references. Obtain one matched current frame/grate/fastener submittal rather than mixing versions or substituting ProFit hardware. The catalog explicitly excludes DS-240 trash-bucket use with DS-200H. Retention still requires facility acceptance.

Existing light-duty trench frames — Josam 76300 series

12″ × 20″ nominal grate · verify option code and frame compatibility

Josam identifies the standard 76300 as a light-duty cast-iron grate with 1/2-inch × 5-inch openings. Its manufacturer submittal assigns -VP to secured grates with vandal-proof screws and -40 to galvanizing. Confirm that option description in writing because the local listing labels differ. A replacement must match bearing dimensions, thickness, bolt locations and frame condition; nominal size does not guarantee a grate-only swap or avoid frame repairs. No detention or ligature certification is established by the option name.

Interior washdown and shower collection — ACO sanitary drainage

Point drains · channels · floor sinks · separate shower range

Use removable grated channels where staff need access along the run, point drains where the floor can grade to a sump, and floor sinks where the equipment connection requires them. Compare the listed shower range for the room’s floor construction. ACO SlotDrain 20 has a nominal 20 mm slot; do not assume accessible-opening compliance or ligature resistance. Josam also offers 304/316L floor and trench drains for comparison when geometry or outlet needs justify them; confirm supply and exact cleanability documentation.

Service access and replacement hardware — valve boxes & spares

Access enclosures · approved covers and fasteners · planned spares

Listed NDS bolt-down access boxes are not drainage inlets or universal vehicle/security enclosures. For example, the 13 × 24 Pro-Spec sheet limits use to pedestrian and lawn-care-equipment loading. Verify the exact box and cover for its location. Consider approved spare grates, fixings and fittings to support maintenance, without assuming inventory or a particular repair turnaround.

Materials must match cleaning and process chemistry

Record chemical identity, concentration, peak temperature, contact time and rinse practice for detergents, disinfectants, deicers and workshop fluids. Obtain compatibility for the body, grate, welds, rails, seals and joint materials together. Stainless steel is not a universal approval for hot bleach or concentrated cleaners; an exterior composite channel does not become hygienic stainless drainage when fitted with a stainless grate. Josam Pro-Plus is a polyester composite alternative for compatible exterior/service duties: its chemical chart includes exclusions such as acetone and hot concentrated caustic. Match the actual exposure and whole assembly before considering it for a wash stream.

Frequently asked questions

What load class should a sally port or vehicle trap drain be?

Use the project’s specified standard and the manufacturer’s documentation for the complete assembly. Include actual service vehicles, wheel and tire details, and crossing movements. Confirm the channel, grate, frame, locks, and installation together; a site label alone does not determine the rating.

Can drainage grates be secured so they cannot be lifted or carried off?

Compatible bolts and retainers can resist unauthorized removal, but no generic “secured” label guarantees that a grate cannot be removed. Specify the exact grate, frame, anchors, hardware and tool-control procedure for facility review. Bolt-down, tamper-resistant and ligature-resistant features address different needs; exterior retention hardware is not a cell or clinical-room safety certification.

Do you supply drainage inside cells, showers, the kitchen or the laundry?

The catalog lists ACO sanitary channels, floor drains and floor sinks and a separate shower-drain range. Confirm configuration and availability. Cell, shower and clinical projects also need specific security or ligature-risk acceptance; general sanitary or shower products do not establish it. Kitchen and laundry designs must address their own waste streams, cleanability, treatment and approved connections.
