A park is acres of concrete with a story painted over it — and the grate is the one piece of drainage infrastructure a guest will ever actually look at. Here is how we drain midways, queues, splash-down surrounds and backstage yards without putting a hole in the world you built.

A park is a watershed with a story wrapped around it

Strip the theming off an amusement park and what is left is one of the most aggressive impervious surfaces in commercial construction. Midway, hub, queue plaza, food court, parade route, load platform, service road, and forty acres of guest parking: nearly all of it sheds every drop that lands on it, most of it drains onto more pavement rather than onto ground, and every square foot has a guest standing on it when the storm arrives.

What makes this its own discipline is the constraint stack on top of the volume. The surface has to be an accessible route, so you cannot crown it hard and shed to the edges — the 2010 ADA Standards hold cross slope on an accessible route to 1:48, about 2%, and running slope to 1:20 before it becomes a ramp. Across a 40 ft themed street, 2% buys about 10 in. of total fall, and once paver settlement and slab tolerance eat a quarter inch here and there, a street that is theoretically drained is practically a field of birdbaths — each one sitting in a hero photo sightline on the busiest afternoon of the year.

Then the part nobody outside themed entertainment appreciates: the drainage has to disappear. A drain in an 1890s main street cannot look like a drain from 2026. The grate is the one item in the system that lives at guest eye level, gets photographed thousands of times a day, and gets stepped on by everyone who walks through the gate. Parks care about it more than any customer we serve, and they are right to.

And a park never stops. Washdown crews hose and steam midways and food areas between close and open, so every channel gets deliberately flooded with detergent and gum residue several nights a week, and every grate has to come out fast, go back in locked, and still be there in the morning. That fact reshapes what we spec more than the rainfall does.

What a park actually needs — including the parts we don’t sell

Surface collection and conveyance — ours

Linear channel across the path of sheet flow, catch basins at low points and direction changes, grates matched to the load and the look, drainage fittings, and the pipe path off the surface. On a park that covers midways, hubs, queues, food-court aprons, ride surrounds, back-of-house yards and tram lanes.

Attraction water — not ours, and not close

Flume troughs, tanks and reservoirs, filtration and UV, chemical feed, pumps, nozzles, wave generators, show-fountain controls: attraction-manufacturer and aquatic-contractor equipment, governed by your state pool code and, on interactive water play, by the Model Aquatic Health Code language many states have adopted. We sell no pumps, recirculation or treatment of any kind. We drain the deck the attraction sits in.

Interceptors, separators and detention — downstream, by others

Grease interceptors behind every food location, sand traps at a splash zone, oil-water separators at a backstage wash bay or fuel island, underground detention and bioswales satisfying your stormwater permit. All real, all necessary, none of them ours. We spec the collection that feeds them and hand off at the tie-in.

Hygienic interior kitchen drainage — a line we will not blur

Parks run serious commissary and back-kitchen operations, and those interiors want crevice-free sanitary stainless channel engineered against FSMA, USDA, NSF, 3-A or EHEDG expectations. We do not sell that product and will not imply our catalog carries those approvals. Exterior and general-duty zones — the apron outside the service window, the cart commissary pad, the dumpster slab, the loading side of a restaurant — are squarely ours. We draw that line at the door, every time.

Under the berms and the show lawn: the subsurface half that isn’t ours

Themed landscaping is not decoration; it is the sightline blocker that makes a park work, and it usually sits on engineered fill. Berms hiding backstage buildings, planted medians breaking a midway, event and picnic lawns, turf show areas, the back of every retaining wall — all of that gets subsurface drainage, and it should.

A french drain is perforated pipe bedded in washed stone and wrapped in geotextile. It intercepts water that has already soaked into soil and moves it slowly, so it keeps a berm from staying saturated against a wall, keeps an event lawn walkable the morning after a storm, keeps root zones from going anaerobic, and dries a backstage lay-down yard. Parks install miles of it. We sell none of it — not the perforated pipe, not the stone, not the fabric — because it is contractor-installed earthwork, and nothing in our catalog is a french drain or should ever be described as one.

Where the two systems meet is worth designing on purpose. Sheet flow off hardscape has no business entering an underdrain; it will silt it closed in a season. Intercept it at the hardscape edge with a channel, drop it into a catch basin with a real sump, and bring the contractor’s underdrain into that same structure as a second inlet. One outlet, one lid, one place a crew has to open.

Putting a number on a midway before anyone picks a grate

Water in a park runs downhill until something stops it and concentrates wherever the surface narrows or flattens. Those points are unusually predictable here, because the architecture creates them: the low end of a themed street, the threshold where a shop floor meets the midway, the outfall of a queue canopy, the pinch where a land transition necks a 40 ft street down to a 16 ft archway, and the base of every set of steps.

Volume first. One inch of rain on 1,000 sq ft of impervious surface is about 623 gallons. A 40 ft × 400 ft midway is 16,000 sq ft, so that street alone sheds just under 10,000 gallons per inch — before the shop roofs on both sides, which almost always drain to the same place.

Peak flow sizes the system. Run the rational method, Q = C × i × A, with a runoff coefficient near 0.95 for finished concrete and set pavers. That midway is 0.367 acres, so under a 4 in./hr design storm it produces roughly 1.4 cfs — about 626 gpm. Then check the bottleneck, which is almost never the grate. A 5″ Pro Series grate passes 101.75 gpm per foot at Class B, so a 40 ft crossing has intake to spare at 626 gpm. The outlet is where systems fail: running full at 1% in smooth pipe, Manning gives a 4 in. line near 100 gpm, a 6 in. near 300 and an 8 in. near 640. That midway needs an 8 in. outlet, or two 6 in. laterals off two basins. The most common defect we get called about is a beautiful trench line tied into whatever stub happened to be in the ground.

Two park-specific notes. Queue canopies are roofs and they get forgotten: a 60 ft × 40 ft covered switchback is 2,400 sq ft, roughly 1,495 gallons per inch and about 94 gpm at peak — a single 4 in. lateral at its limit before you collect a drop off the pavement beside it. And washdown never sizes anything: three crews on pressure washers is maybe 12 gpm against a storm figure fifty times larger. Washdown drives the grate decision, not the pipe.

Onstage, the grate is scenery

This is the part of park drainage nobody else writes about, so let us be blunt: on the guest side of the berm, the grate is a set-dressing decision that happens to have a load rating. Get it wrong and you have installed a 2026 utility product in an 1890s street, or a bright galvanized rectangle in a jungle path, and it is in every photograph taken on that corner forever.

Hide it. The best themed grate has no grate face at all. A slot top gives a continuous narrow opening at the paving line: no pattern to read, nothing to catch a stroller caster, no metal plane baking in August, nothing to pry. The Dura-Slope Slot Top is galvanized steel in 2 ft and 4 ft units, published by NDS as meeting both ADA and heel-proof standards — which matters more here than most places, because parade performers in character shoes and costumes with limited downward visibility cross those lines nightly. On the engineered side, ACO Brickslot units do the same job in a brick or paver field, with matching access sections so the line stays serviceable.

Match it. Where a grate must be visible, make it agree with the ground. Plastic tops come in Black, Gray, Green and Sand across the Spee-D and Mini Channel families, and a green or sand grate genuinely vanishes in a planting bed or a decomposed-granite path where a gray one never will. Watch the trap: Mini Channel bodies, couplings and end caps come in Gray and Sand only, so a run finished in another color is matched at the grate, not the body.

Make it part of the story. This is where our decorative grate range earns its keep. Botanical (#252 Spee-D, #554 Mini) and Wave (#253 Spee-D, #555 Mini) come in the four colors and in cast iron as #252CI and #554CI, and iron reads as period hardware in a way plastic cannot. The Dura-Slope iron line adds weave, diamond and tile patterns in raw iron that patinas on purpose — the closest thing we sell to an aged finish that looks better in year five than year one. For a Victorian arcade, brass runs satin and polished from a 3 in. round collar to 12 in. basin tops; chrome covers 3 in. and 4 in. round for a retro-futuristic read. The mistake we see most often is picking the finish before the traffic. Brass and chrome are jewelry: on the Mini Channel, brass stays Class A at 60 PSI while a cast iron top on the same channel is Class B to 175 PSI under 20 mph. If the night crew’s cart, a float chassis or a scissor lift crosses that line — and backstage traffic reaches almost everywhere onstage after close — the brass is wrong no matter how good it looks at noon. Decide the load first, then choose the prettiest thing that clears it.

From stroller casters to the parade tractor: the load ladder

Park load classes are strange because the same 8 ft of concrete carries a barefoot four-year-old at 2 p.m. and a tow tractor at 2 a.m. Spec for the 2 a.m. traffic and finish for the 2 p.m. guest.

  • Class A 15 — 15 kN, about 3,372 lbf. Honest only inside a fenced planting bed or a court no vehicle can reach.
  • Class B 125 — 125 kN, about 28,100 lbf. Our floor onstage, because carts, sweepers and pallet jacks own the midways after close.
  • Class C 250 — 250 kN, about 56,200 lbf. Parade routes, hub crossings, cart returns, food-court delivery lanes.
  • Class D 400 — 400 kN, about 89,900 lbf. Tram lanes, fire lanes, backstage service roads, bus loops, commissary docks.
  • Class E 600 — 600 kN, about 134,900 lbf. Crane pads and heavy-lift ride-maintenance aprons.
  • Class F 900 at 202,300 lbf is port and airfield territory and rarely lands inside a park fence.

H-20 as a 16,000-lb wheel and HS-25 as 20,000 lb are AASHTO trade heuristics for talking to a civil drawing, not an equivalence to an EN class. Full ratings are in the Load Class Recommendation Guide. Body and grate are rated separately, and the published rating assumes full concrete encasement, so the pour matters as much as the product.

Opening size is a separate question from class, and in a park it is the one that generates incident reports — the 1/2 in. sphere rule, which grates clear it, and why round-hole patterns beat slots on a hub are covered in the FAQ below.

Where each piece lands, front gate to backstage gate

  • Esplanade, ticketing and bag check. Wide hardscape with stanchions and canopies, plus bus and tram drop-offs at the edge. Long lines parallel to the queue direction, basins at low points, a class step-up where the transit lane touches the plaza.
  • The midway spine. Cross-street lines at land transitions and the low end of each street, plus a line at the building face where shop roofs discharge. This is where pre-sloped channel pays for itself: an accessible route cannot give you fall, so the channel has to bring its own.
  • Queue switchbacks. Narrow, dead-flat, rail-to-rail concrete with a canopy pouring into it and nowhere to fall. Shallow channel between the rails, canopy downspouts tied into the line instead of splashing the deck.
  • Ride splash-down surrounds. Permanently wet, chronically corroded, loaded with whatever the ride throws. Perimeter channel on the wet side, corrosion-appropriate metal tops, a sump that catches grit. The attraction water is the manufacturer’s; the deck is ours. Aquatic detail lives in splash pads & aquatic facilities.
  • Food court and cart commissary. Nightly washdown, sugar and grease, and a floor crew that will pry any grate that does not lift easily. Removable, locked grates and generous basin sumps; interceptors downstream, by others.
  • Parade route and hub. Float chassis on small hard casters, tow tractors, and performers who cannot see their own feet. Flush-set grates, Class C minimum, openings that do not eat a caster or a heel.
  • Backstage yards, docks and ride-maintenance bays. The top of the class ladder, and where quote-only engineered channel belongs.
  • Tram lanes and guest parking. Acres of asphalt producing enormous peaks; the civil design owns inlets and detention, and we supply trench where a lane crosses a walkway or curb-cut.
  • Planted medians, tree pits and show berms. Atrium grates where leaves and mulch would blind a flat grate, and the contractor’s underdrain tying into our basin.

The default for a themed street, and the reason is geometry: an accessible route cannot give you fall, so the channel supplies it. Dura-Slope molds 0.7% into every 48 in. section — 8.4 in. of gained invert over a 100 ft run, with nobody chasing grade on shims — and radius couplings turn a curved street as tight as a 30-degree radius. Channel and grates are tested to AASHTO M-306 and EN 1433 (DIN 19580) methods by an independent AASHTO-accredited lab, which is what a park’s engineering group wants instead of a marketing claim. The disappearing act — Dura-Slope Slot Top

Our first answer whenever a designer says the drain cannot be visible: no grate face reading as modern hardware, no pattern fighting the paving, and nothing a determined guest can lift. NDS publishes it as meeting both ADA and heel-proof standards, which covers the two hardest crowds in a park at once — performers in character shoes and guests in flip-flops. Plan the ends before ordering: NDS’s detail puts 2 ft of slot top plus a 2 ft maintenance unit in the first and last four feet, and that maintenance unit can sit inside the basin at the end of the run.

Period ironwork that still takes a wheel — cast iron Botanical and Wave

Where the story wants metal and the traffic wants a rating, cast iron is the compromise that does not feel like one. Botanical and Wave tops in iron read as period hardware in an arcade or a market street, and on the Mini Channel a cast iron grate carries Class B to 175 PSI under 20 mph — enough for the carts that own the midway after close. The Dura-Slope raw-iron weave, diamond and tile patterns arrive bright and patina on their own, which is exactly what an art director wants and exactly what a shop coating cannot fake. Queues are the worst-drained square footage in most parks: flat, narrow, fenced, roofed, impossible to close for a week. Around a flume splash zone, a chute wave fence, or a misting and interactive-fountain area, Spee-D is the workhorse: the 3/8 in. opening sits well inside the sphere rule for guests in bare feet and sandals, six colors let it disappear against wet concrete, and sections cut with a miter saw for the odd geometry these surrounds always have. The lost-and-found sump — NDS 18 in. catch basin

The highest-return item on a park job and the first one value-engineered out of a bid. Every inch of sump below the outlet invert banks about 0.18 cu ft — roughly 1.35 gallons — so an outlet set 6 in. off the floor gives about 8 gallons of quiet volume where the day’s load drops out instead of migrating into a 4 in. lateral. And a park’s load is unlike anybody else’s: popcorn that floats and mats, single-use ponchos, straws and plush stuffing, confetti and streamer wadding after a parade, and every autumn the themed landscaping. It is also where a guest’s phone actually ends up — a real operational argument for a serviceable sump. Once an engineer’s spec names polymer concrete, a cast-in edge rail, or a specific EN 1433 class, this is the line. Grates in a park crack under a scissor lift, disappear because brass and iron carry scrap value, and get discontinued in a color three years after the land opens. Buy 10% to 15% of your linear footage as spares at install — exact SKU, exact finish, with a box of stainless fasteners — and shelve them backstage. A crew swapping a grate in ten minutes at 6 a.m. is the difference between a themed street and a coned-off street on a 30,000-guest Saturday. Can we get grates that match our theming?

Within a real catalog, yes, and the range is wider than most designers expect. Botanical and Wave tops come in Black, Gray, Green and Sand plastic and in cast iron as 252CI on the Spee-D and 554CI on the Mini Channel. The Dura-Slope iron line adds weave, diamond and tile patterns in raw iron that patinas on purpose. Small collection points go to satin and polished brass from a 3 in. round collar up to 9 in. and 12 in. basin tops, and to polished or satin chrome in 3 in. and 4 in. round. Watch the ceiling that comes with the finish: on the Mini Channel, cast iron grates are Class B to 175 PSI under 20 mph while brass stays Class A at 60 PSI. One midway line into one 4 in. stub is a flooded street, and we have been called out to look at exactly that.

Are your grates safe for strollers, wheelchairs and bare feet?

Read the opening dimension off the sheet every time, because it moves by grate and not by brand. Section 302.3 of the 2010 ADA Standards says an opening in a walking surface must not pass a sphere more than 1/2 in. in diameter, with elongated openings set perpendicular to the dominant direction of travel. The NDS Spee-D channel grate opens 3/8 in. × 3-1/4 in. and the NDS 18 in. catch basin grate opens 7/16 in., both comfortably inside the rule. The 8 in. Pro Series HDPE grate opens 5/8 in. × 2 in., which is fine in a service yard and wrong on a midway. In a park the sphere rule is the floor, not the goal: stroller casters, rented ECV wheels, cane tips and flip-flop toes all fail on the same grate, and guests cross a hub from every direction at once, so slot orientation protects nobody and round-hole perforated patterns win.

Can a french drain drain a themed street?

Not the street, no, but it is genuinely part of a park drainage picture and worth being straight about. A french drain is perforated pipe bedded in washed stone and wrapped in geotextile, and parks install miles of it: under show berms so fill does not stay saturated against a retaining wall, under event and picnic lawns that must be walkable the morning after a storm, behind planter walls, under artificial turf, in backstage lay-down yards. It moves water that has already soaked into soil, slowly, and it cannot take sheet flow leaving 16,000 sq ft of concrete at 626 gpm. We do not sell perforated underdrain pipe, stone or geotextile — that is contractor-installed work — and nothing in our catalog is a french drain. What we sell is the surface-collection layer the underdrain ties into, and the catch basin that gives both systems one outlet and one lid.

What about the food court and the commissary kitchen?

Split the job honestly, because the two halves are different products. Exterior and general-duty zones are ours: the apron outside a quick-service window, the cart commissary pad, the beverage-station slab, the dumpster and grease-caddy pad, the loading side of a restaurant. Those wash down nightly, so we spec channel with a removable, locked grate and a real basin sump. Interior hygienic and GMP kitchen drainage is not ours. Crevice-free sanitary stainless channel — the kind specified against FSMA, USDA, NSF, 3-A or EHEDG expectations — is engineered sanitary equipment we do not sell, and we will not imply our products carry those approvals.
