A horse facility is the only property where the drainage hardware gets stood on, struck, and pawed at by a 1,200-lb animal wearing steel. Here are the numbers that decide whether a grate belongs under hooves — opening geometry to the hundredth of an inch, how the grate is held down, and how to keep arena sand out of the pipe.

A barn, a ring, a gate, and a truck lane

Every boarding barn and show grounds we've specced is really four properties sharing a driveway. The arena is the largest flat surface on the place, ringed by a kickboard that traps every drop reaching it. The barn has an aisle, a wash rack at one end, and two roof planes drawing dark stripes along the eaves because gutters were value-engineered out of the build. The paddocks and gateways have been compacted by hooves into something that sheds water almost like pavement, which is why the gate is soup from November through April on a farm with "plenty of grass to soak it up." And the service side — trailer parking, hay lane, manure pad, spreader route — puts heavy vehicles on ground nobody designed as pavement.

The water is ordinary; the constraints stacked on it are not. A hoof must never be able to enter an opening. A cross-tied horse paws at whatever is under it, so a grate that lifts is a trap that has been armed. And the runoff carries arena sand and tail hair, a sediment load no municipal drain sees. The mistake we see most often is buying one product for the whole property — usually a plastic channel with the long-slot grate, because it flows best on paper — and running it down the length of the barn aisle, the one place that grate should never go.

Reading the water before you buy anything

Start with the roofs, because they are the biggest number and nobody counts them. Figure 623 gallons per 1,000 sq ft per inch of rain; a roof sheds essentially all of it. An 80' × 200' covered arena is 16,000 sq ft, so one inch drops 9,968 gallons at the drip line, and a 12-stall 40' × 120' barn adds 2,990 — all of it landing in two narrow strips on soil horses have already packed to hardpan. Our honest opinion before you buy any drain from us: gutter the buildings first. Moving roof water through a downspout costs a fraction of catching it after it has spread out and cut a trench (see downspout drainage for how to terminate those lines).

Then the riding surfaces and the low points. A 20 m × 60 m dressage court is 12,917 sq ft — 8,047 gallons per inch if the base sheds rather than soaks; a 60' × 120' outdoor ring, 4,486. What shows up isn't a flooded arena but a soft strip along one long side, still greasy three days later, because the kickboard dammed the water and nothing collected it. Walk the place during a storm rather than after: twenty wet minutes shows where water stops being spread out and starts concentrating, and that transition is where a drain belongs. The answer picks the device: a channel intercepts water crossing a line, a basin collects water arriving at a point. Aisle mouths, wash-rack entries, and arena perimeters are lines; gateways, paddock corners, and the dip in the trailer lot are points.

Three throats, and the one that throttles the run

Every run has three throats — grate, channel, outlet pipe — and moves whatever the smallest allows. On a horse property that's the outlet, nine times in ten, and hoof-safe grates tighten the math because tight openings cost intake. A 1/4" hoof-safe grate takes 21.03 GPM per foot; the standard 5" Pro Series slotted grate takes 101.75. Hoof safety costs about 79% of the intake on the identical channel — a trade we make every time in a barn, buying the capacity back with a longer run rather than a wider one. Length is cheap; an entrapped hoof is not.

Now the outlet. Through Manning's equation at n = 0.010 and 1% slope (about 1/8" per foot), smooth-wall solid pipe flowing full carries roughly 110 GPM at 4", 330 at 6", and 700 at 8"; single-wall corrugated, whatever roll is behind the shop, about half that. A 30-foot hoof-safe run still collects about 631 GPM against a 4" line's 110 — the same run with slotted grates, over 3,000. The channel fills, water backs up through the grate, and the owner concludes it's plugged. It isn't; it's throttled. Size the outlet first, then the channel, then the grate. For basin spacing, Dura-Slope carries a 0.7% built-in slope, each 4-foot section dropping 0.34" as it deepens from 3.99" to 12.06" — about 96 feet of falling run — while BG Filcoten publishes roughly 135 feet, or 162 with a neutral section. On a 200-foot arena side, that decides whether you dig one sump or two.

The parts of a horse property's drainage we don't sell

Arena bases, paddock tile, and french drains

Roughly half the drainage on a well-built horse facility is underground, and none of it comes from us. An arena that stays rideable in February has an engineered base under the footing: compacted subgrade, a lift of clean angular stone, geotextile keeping footing from migrating into it, and in wet ground a grid of perforated pipe running to a header. A french drain is that idea drawn as a line — perforated pipe bedded in washed stone, wrapped in fabric, typically 18" to 36" deep — intercepting water moving through the soil rather than across it. A paddock still soggy a week after everything else has dried has a water-table problem, and the fix is pattern tile on the same principle.

We sell none of that, and we'd rather say so than sell you something adjacent: no perforated pipe, no washed stone, no geotextile, no grading, and we are not the people to design an arena base — that's arena-builder and ag-engineer work, and it's worth what it costs. We carry the layer above, surface collection, catching water before it ever reaches the base. Nothing in our catalog should be called a french drain; a channel drain is the opposite device, capturing water on top of the surface rather than underneath it. Most horse properties need both layers, bought from two different people.

Wash water, manure runoff, and everything downstream

Water that has run through a manure pack, compost windrow, or sacrifice paddock is frequently a regulated waste stream rather than stormwater. Containment and treatment get designed by an ag engineer or through NRCS — never tie a manure-contact drain into a clean-water line without confirming where that water is allowed to end up. Our hardware helps on the clean side of that fence, keeping roof and upslope water out of the dirty area, usually the cheapest compliance move a farm has. Oil separators, interceptors, and settling structures are downstream, by others — nothing we sell treats water, and we don't sell pumps, septic, or recirculation. A wash rack below the sewer invert is a pump job for a plumber.

Vet suites and other inspected rooms

If a room on the property is an inspected surgical, laboratory, or food-handling space, its interior floor drainage is engineered sanitary drainage — crevice-free stainless built for a specific cleaning and inspection regime. We do not sell that, and nothing in our catalog holds those certifications or should be specified as if it did. We serve the general-duty and exterior zones: aisles, wash racks, aprons, arena perimeters, gateways, service lanes, spectator hardscape. The hoof-safety spec nobody writes down

There is no equine grate standard. No manufacturer publishes a hoof rating, there is no equine load class, and no grate in anyone's catalog is certified for horses. So we borrow the two written standards that measure the same failure mode — something narrow entering a slot and getting trapped — and spec to the tighter one:

  • ADA 2010, Section 302.3: an opening must not pass a 1/2" sphere, and elongated openings must sit perpendicular to the direction of travel.
  • ASME A112.6.3, Section 7.12 — the heel-resistant rule: openings no larger than 0.31". Call it 5/16", and note how much tighter it is than ADA.

That gap is the most useful thing on this page, because "ADA compliant" gets printed on grates a horse should never stand on. ACO's Type 405D mesh grate is genuinely ADA compliant at 1.20" × 0.50" — and is not heel-resistant, because 0.50" blows past 0.31". One page over in the same catalog, the Type 410D perforated grate uses 0.25" (6 mm) round holes and is rated heel-resistant per ASME. Same brand, same channel, opposite answers: ask which standard, not whether it's compliant. Two habits follow, both mattering more than material or load class. The number that counts is the short dimension of the opening, never the headline — a "half-inch grate" can be a 1/2" × 1-1/4" slot or a 1/2" × 5-3/4" slot, different animals under a shoe. And orientation is free, yet everyone gets it wrong: run the channel across the direction horses travel. A long slot laid down the length of a barn aisle is the worst geometry on a horse property, and it happens constantly because it's the natural way to lay a drain in an aisle.

The grates marked "no" are excellent products, right at home in the equipment lane — just not where a horse walks. Two rows deserve a word. The #714 at 5/16" is 0.3125", a thousandth of an inch over the ASME limit; we'll use it on a cross-travel run and say exactly that rather than pretend it's a comfortable margin. The standard 5" HDPE at 1/2" sits right at the ADA sphere limit with genuinely short slots, so we accept it for barefoot horses. For shod horses — especially in studs, road nails, or borium — go to 1/4" and stop mourning the flow. One honest note on the #824: NDS's own sheet says "recommended for pedestrian traffic" on one line and "Class B (61–175 PSI / 28,100 lbs per foot)" on the next. We read that the way a contractor would — fine under a gator, a utility tractor, and a shavings cart, not a line to park a loaded truck on.

Catch basin grates are the weak link

This is the spec that gets missed, because people check the channel and never check the basin twenty feet away in the same paddock. Run the basin line against the 0.31" limit and nothing in it qualifies: the tightest stock openings are 7/16" on the 9" #980 and 18" #1811 plastic grates, 3/8" on the atrium domes (#981, #1290), 3/4" on the 9" galvanized #915, and a full 1" on the 18" #1813 and #1815. Whatever label is printed on the carton, a 1" opening is out under a horse. So the rule is placement, not product: put basins off the traveled line — outside the kickboard, beside the gate rather than in the middle where every hoof funnels through, behind a rail, at the corner of the wash apron. Where a collection point truly has to sit in the horses' path, use a channel with a hoof-safe grate and pipe it to a basin somewhere safer.

Then lock it — the pawing horse is the real test

Opening geometry gets the attention; retention causes the incidents. A grate that lifts an inch is a trap that has been armed, and every system we sell has an answer you have to actually buy:

  • NDS Pro Series grates take four stainless #8 × 1" screws each — sold separately, which is exactly why they get skipped. In a barn they're structural hardware, not an accessory.
  • Dura-Slope uses the ProFit grate lock (part #DS-122) to fix the grate to the integral frame, plus the DuraLoc joint lock so sections can't walk apart underfoot.
  • BG Filcoten grates carry a 4-point locking system with anti-sliding lugs against lateral shift, and accept an anti-vandalism locking device.
  • ACO's DrainLok and QuickLok are boltless and barless with an anti-shunt mechanism, released by the 01318 removal tool — the ideal barn combination, since a groom lifts the 6.3-lb Type 410D grate in seconds with the tool and a hoof never will.

One material note for indoors: in a closed barn heavy with ammonia, galvanizing doesn't last the way it does out in the weather, so on interior runs we push stainless or ductile iron. The full comparison lives in metal grates.

Sand, hair, and shavings: the load that actually kills barn drains

Capacity almost never kills a barn drain. Sediment does. Arena sand tracks out on hooves and gets hosed off in the wash rack; tail hair mats into a felt that blinds a perforated grate in one clipping session; shavings float in on aisle washdown. Two hoses running flat out is maybe 15–20 GPM, a rounding error against any 4" or 5" channel — these drains fail because they were designed for the water and not for what was in it. The strategy isn't filtration, it's interception somewhere a shovel reaches:

  • Put a sump at the end of the run. A 12" catch basin downstream of a wash-rack channel is the single best addition on this page — drop in the #1225 sump box (12-3/8" × 12-3/8" × 14-1/2") and sand collects below the outlet instead of packing the pipe.
  • Keep the sump inside the trench line where you can. A Dura-Slope run can terminate in the DS-340 in-line catch basin — 2 feet long, 2 feet deep, outlets both sides, adapting to 3", 4", 6", or 8" pipe — with the DS-240 trash bucket inside. That bucket is the piece most barns never order and the one that turns a jetting invoice into a five-minute chore.
  • Add a filter bag where hair is the complaint. The #900FF and #1200FF filters are spun-bonded polypropylene geotextile with a bypass, so water still reaches the basin when the bag is loaded. A filter without a bypass is a plug waiting for a thunderstorm.
  • On ACO runs, use the trash bucket. Series 600 KlassikDrain basins carry a removable polypropylene bucket ahead of the outlet; the K1-621G is 22.67" × 15.91" × 29.11" deep, 24.9 gallons, with published outlet flows (bucket removed) of 225–276 GPM at 4" and 1,061 at 8".
  • Prefer round perforations to long slots in dirty water, and fit atrium grates on basins sitting in footing or mud. Perforations give up intake — 8.75 sq in/ft against 25.40 slotted on the same channel — that you never needed on a wash slab. A flat basin grate silts blind in one season; the domed 9" (#981) gives 96.36 GPM, the 12" (#1290) 154.79, the 18" (#1881) 386.77. Keep them off the walked line.

Then put the cleaning on a calendar. A serviceable sump every 40–60 feet, scooped on a schedule instead of after a flood, is the difference between a barn chore and an emergency call. Where the drains go, from the aisle to the trailer lot

Barn aisle and wash rack

A channel across the aisle mouth — not down its length — catches washdown and blown rain before it reaches stall fronts and tack. Narrow beats wide indoors: the 3" Pro Series takes less concrete out of an existing slab than a 5" and still moves 102.23 GPM per foot. Where you can only saw-cut a shallow line, the 4" Spee-D or Mini Channel in a threshold is the realistic retrofit. Slope a wash slab 1/8" to 1/4" per foot toward the channel; flatter and hair-laden water stops moving between rinses, which is how a wash rack develops a smell.

Arena perimeter, in-gates, and paddock gateways

Surface collection along the low side of a ring is the piece that pairs with a base you didn't buy from us: a channel outside the kickboard, or basins at the natural low points in the skirt, keeps sheet flow from surrounding grade out of the arena — usually a far bigger win than trying to drain the footing. Gates take the worst of it, arena and paddock alike: concentrated hoof traffic, concentrated water, sand pushed out with every horse. That's catch basin territory with a real sump under it, set beside the opening rather than in it, and it's where the hoof-safe grate belongs. Do the upstream half too — if a shed roof and a hillside feed that gate, nothing at the gate keeps up until the water is intercepted higher. Trailer parking, hay lanes, and the manure pad

Here load class stops being a formality. The EN 1433 ladder runs A 15 kN, B 125, C 250, D 400, E 600, F 900. A two-horse bumper-pull is light-truck traffic; a loaded gooseneck or full manure spreader is a Class D (400 kN) crossing; show grounds taking semi deliveries and running a forklift can justify Class E (600 kN). Treat the H-20 shorthand carefully — NDS labels both a Class C nylon grate and a Class D cast iron grate "H-20 rated," so we use H-20 (roughly a 16,000-lb wheel load; HS-25 roughly 20,000 lb) as a trade heuristic with contractors, never as a substitute for the EN class on a submittal. Discharge — and where it is not allowed to go

Every run needs a legal endpoint: daylight at a lower grade, a pop-up emitter out in a pasture, or a dry well where daylighting isn't possible. Never aim one at a neighbor, a well head, a septic field, a spring, or back toward a foundation, and never combine a manure-contact line with a clean-water line. Solid drainage fittings and the right basin outlets are where cheap installations fail first.

Cross-tie safe: the barn-aisle default

Almost everything else in the catalog makes you choose between hoof safety and a vehicle rating; this row refuses to. Screw down every grate and run the channel across the aisle, never along it.

Capacity: 21.03 GPM/ft — ample for washdown, and not the grate to catch a roof with. Gutter the building and pipe that water past this drain.

The wash stall that runs all summer

Dura-Slope + perforated #DS-670 + DS-340 basin and DS-240 bucket

Dura-Slope with the perforated plastic grate (#DS-670 / #DS-671), terminating in the DS-340 in-line catch basin with the DS-240 trash bucket. Three reasons in the order they matter: the 0.7% molded-in slope keeps hair-laden water moving on a slab poured flat and since settled; round perforations are hoof-safe in any orientation, removing the commonest installer error; and grates lift out for rinsing, the only maintenance anyone performs. We skip the better-flowing slotted grate on purpose — this drain lives under cross-tied horses.

Capacity: 8.75 sq in/ft at Class B against a two-hose demand of 15–20 GPM. The constraint is solids, not water — add the #1225 sump box and a #1200FF filter if hair is the recurring complaint.

The long side of the ring

Dura-Slope run + 18" basins, grates mixed by section

Along a kickboard you're managing length, not width, so the built-in fall is what you're buying — about 96 feet of falling run on a surface that never had grade. Break to an 18" catch basin rather than a 12": you're collecting a large area and want room for a 6"–8" outlet. Here's the part people don't realize they're allowed to do — where the line sits outside the ring and no horse crosses it, run the standard slotted grate and take the flow back, then switch to a hoof-safe grate only at the sections crossing a gate or leadway. Mixing grate types mid-run is normal and costs nothing.

Capacity: 18" basin grate #1811 — 86.31 sq in, 264.06 GPM at Class B. Size the outlet from the arena area first: a 20 m × 60 m court is 8,047 gallons per inch.

The gate that turns to soup

9" or 12" catch basin kit + atrium grate + pop-up emitter

A catch basin kit at the true low point — found during a storm, not guessed from the house — atrium grate on top, solid line to a pop-up emitter downslope. A basin rather than a channel because gateway water arrives concentrated; an atrium rather than a flat grate because a flat grate in mud silts blind in a season while a dome keeps its intake above the muck line. Set it beside the walked line: 3/8" atrium openings are not heel-resistant.

Capacity: 9" basin 114.69 GPM with the #980 grate, 12" basin 155.28 with the #1210. Collecting a shed roof as well? Step up to the 24" basin rather than adding a second small one.

Shared line: hoof and tractor tire

BG Filcoten Tec V100 / V200 + heel-proof Class C or D grate

The alley or arena entrance a skid steer, compact tractor, or loaded spreader crosses is the hardest spec on the property, because you need heel-proof geometry and a real vehicle rating in the same part number. Filcoten Tec V100 (4") or V200 (8") is where we keep landing: the Filcoten 100 composite honeycomb and the 100 ductile iron bar grate both hold ADA and heel-proof geometry at Class C (250 kN), and the Filcoten 200 Ductile Kiaro carries it to Class D (400 kN). The fiber-reinforced concrete body also takes freeze-thaw and UV better than plastic and doesn't go brittle at the edge where wheels transition — which is where heavy runs actually fail.

Show day: boots and hooves on the same line

Where the public walks in show attire and horses cross the same drain — in-gates, warm-up entries, viewing terraces — the ACO KlassikDrain K100/KS100 grate catalog is the deepest set of heel-safe options we can put in front of you. The Type 410D perforated gives 0.25" round holes, heel-resistant per ASME A112.6.3 §7.12, with 28.30 sq in of intake per meter at 6.3 lbs a grate. Where the drain should disappear visually, the Heel-Resistant Brickslot 100 Type 470 presents offset double 5/16" (8 mm) slots flaring to a 7/8" (22 mm) throat below the surface — a nearly invisible line at a paver edge, at Class C. On these systems the grate you fit determines the realized load class of the installed run, so it's a specification decision, never a finish decision. Gooseneck, hay truck, spreader

Where loaded goosenecks, hay trucks, and the spreader cross daily, plastic is the wrong material and no grate rescues it. ACO KlassikDrain K200 (8") brings polymer concrete channel bodies with galvanized or stainless edge rails; PowerDrain S100K adds integrally cast ductile iron edge rails, a built-in slope, and boltless PowerLok grates, with published loading reaching EN 1433 Class F (900 kN). Our opinion after watching enough of these fail: the edge rail matters more than the grate. Heavy runs come apart where the wheel transitions at the channel edge, not out in the middle of a grate. Questions horse people actually ask us

What grate opening is actually safe under shod horses?

Are catch basin grates hoof-safe?

Usually not, and it is the spec people miss after checking the channel. The tightest stock openings in the NDS basin line are 7/16" on the 9" #980 and 18" #1811 plastic grates and 3/8" on the atrium domes (#981, #1290) — all wider than the 0.31" limit — while the metal basin grates open to 3/4" on the 9" galvanized #915 and a full 1" on the 18" #1813 and #1815. Keep basins off the traveled line: outside the kickboard, beside the gate rather than in it.

How do I keep arena sand and tail hair out of the pipe?

Intercept it where a shovel reaches. The NDS 12" sump box #1225 (12-3/8" × 12-3/8" × 14-1/2") drops into a 12" basin and holds sand below the outlet. The #900FF and #1200FF filters add a spun-bonded polypropylene bag with a bypass, so water still passes when the bag loads. A Dura-Slope run can end in the DS-340 in-line catch basin with the DS-240 trash bucket, and ACO's Series 600 K1-621G carries a removable 24.9-gallon bucket that lifts straight out.

Do you sell arena base drainage or french drains?

No. Perforated pipe in a washed-stone envelope under an arena base, pattern tile in a wet paddock, a french drain cut across a hillside — that is contractor-installed subsurface work, and we sell none of it: not the pipe, the stone, the geotextile, or the grading. We sell the surface-collection layer above it: channel drains, catch basins, grates, fittings, discharge hardware. Most horse properties need both layers, bought from two different people.

What size outlet pipe does a wash rack or arena drain need?

Size the outlet first, because it is the throttle nine times out of ten. Through Manning's equation at n = 0.010 and 1% slope (about 1/8" per foot), smooth-wall solid pipe flowing full carries roughly 110 GPM at 4", 330 at 6", and 700 at 8"; single-wall corrugated about half that. Even a hoof-safe 1/4" grate takes 21.03 GPM per foot, so a 30-foot run collects about 631 GPM — six times what a 4" line will pass.

Can one drain be hoof-safe and still carry the tractor and the spreader?

Yes, but the list is short. The NDS 5" Pro Series galvanized grate #824 holds 1/4" openings at Class B (61–175 PSI / 28,100 lbs per foot) — a gator, a utility tractor, a pickup. Above that, BG Filcoten keeps ADA and heel-proof geometry at EN 1433 Class C (250 kN) in the Filcoten 100 composite honeycomb and 100 ductile iron bar grate, and reaches Class D (400 kN) with the Filcoten 200 Ductile Kiaro. Past Class D it is the ACO lines, quoted per project.
