In a processing plant, the floor drain is part of the sanitation program. It has to move high-volume wash-down fast, clean up completely between shifts, and carry forklift traffic without working loose. Here is how to spec trench drainage for production floors, and who quotes it same-day.

What fails on processing floors

Standing water after wash-down. Flat slabs with scattered point drains leave puddles where bacteria sit between shifts. A continuous trench run along the wet zone collects wash water across the whole line, not at one low spot.
Drains that fight the sanitation crew. Grates that are heavy to lift without tools, channels with square corners that trap solids, and basins with no strainer all slow the nightly clean and leave residue behind.
Chemical and thermal cycling. Hot rinse water followed by caustic or acid sanitizers, every day. Channel bodies and grates have to be specified for that duty, not for a parking lot.
Traffic mismatch. The same trench that drains a wash zone often crosses a forklift lane. A pedestrian-rated grate under a loaded hard-tire forklift is a failure waiting to happen — and a broken grate in a food plant is a safety and audit problem.

Load class comes first

Match each run to the heaviest wheel that crosses it using our Load Class Recommendation Guide: walk-only wet zones are Class A–B; production floors with pallet jacks and pneumatic-tire forklifts are typically Class C (meets AASHTO H-20); hard-tire forklift routes and dock aprons push into Class D. Both the channel and the grate must carry the rating.

Spec notes for sanitary floors

Coordinate slope with the slab design. Trench drainage works when the finished floor sheds toward it from every direction of the wet zone.
Make the nightly clean easy. Specify removable grates, catch-basin strainers, and grate removal tools on the same order — small line items that decide whether the system actually gets cleaned.
Check discharge requirements. Process water is regulated differently from stormwater in most jurisdictions; confirm temperature, pH, and solids limits with your local authority before locking outlet locations.
Public and mixed areas. Where employee walkways or visitor routes cross a run, use ADA-marked, heel-safe grates — our ADA drainage guide covers the requirements.
