A fountain is the one piece of hardscape that is supposed to be wet — and the one place water refuses to stay where the drawings put it. Here is how we collect splash, drawdown, and plain rainfall around water walls, reflecting pools, and plaza fountains — and exactly where our catalog stops.

A water feature is a wet spot you built on purpose

Water features are the most varied thing we quote. A hotel courtyard water wall throws a film down a face of stone and mists everything near it. A plaza fountain with vertical jets drifts spray thirty feet downwind on a gusty afternoon. A memorial reflecting pool barely moves until somebody drains six thousand gallons of it for a spring cleaning. A garden feature dribbles a gallon a minute and keeps the bed around it saturated year round. Those four jobs share a name and almost nothing else.

What they share is the failure pattern. The feature gets engineered carefully — basin, liner, pumps, nozzles, controls — while the surface around it gets one line on the plan reading “slope to drain.” But the drainage of a water feature is not the feature's drainage; it is the drainage of the wet ring around it. Splash on smooth stone is the slickest hardscape most properties own, and in freeze climates it makes the season's first ice.

Three streams of water, and one that isn't ours

Separate the water first. Nearly every mistake we see on a fountain surround comes from designing for one stream and getting hit by another.

1. Splash, drift, and overspray

Hydraulically the smallest of the three, but it decides where the drain goes, because it lands in the same ring every day. The trade rule we work to: the wetted radius around a jet is at least as wide as the jet is tall, roughly twice that on an exposed plaza. Draw that circle, set the linear drain just outside it, and run it two to three feet past each end of the wet zone. Splash arrives as a thin sheet with no low point, so a strip catching the whole edge beats a basin mid-paving — and a channel set inside the ring stays permanently wet and slick.

2. Maintenance drawdown

The stream nobody sizes for. Every basin gets emptied for cleaning, repair, or winterization, and that volume has to move in a couple of hours. A 40 ft × 20 ft reflecting pool held 12” deep is 800 cubic feet, about 5,980 gallons; hand that to a channel with a 2” stub outlet and you have flooded the plaza. It is the most common reason an outlet needs a bigger pipe, and the first number to get from the fountain contractor. The honest split: the drain valve inside the wetted basin ships with the feature; what we sell starts at the coping.

3. Rain on everything around it

The big number, and the one that actually sizes the system. Paving sheds essentially all the rain that lands on it — 1,000 sq ft yields about 623 gallons per inch. A 60 ft × 40 ft plaza is 2,400 sq ft, so roughly 1,495 gallons per inch: about 23 gpm of peak flow in a 1 in/hr rain and about 94 gpm in a 4 in/hr cloudburst, at a runoff coefficient of 0.95. The retrofit trap is direction. Plazas should pitch away from the feature; existing ones often pitch toward it, because the fountain sits in the architectural low point — and the feature becomes the site's stormwater sump, taking grit, deicing salt, and fertilizer into a basin whose filtration never expected them. And the stream that is not ours: subsurface water

Plenty of features sit in lawn, planting beds, or park turf, and those settings genuinely do use subsurface drainage — perforated pipe bedded in washed stone, wrapped in filter fabric, run to daylight. A french drain, in other words. Around water features they appear in the saturated bed on the shaded side of a basin, in turf that never dries out downwind of the spray, and around below-grade equipment vaults. They solve what surface collection cannot: water already in the soil. We do not sell them — perforated pipe, drain rock, geotextile, and the excavation are contractor-installed territory, and nothing in our catalog is a french drain. If the soil is the problem, that is a landscape contractor or civil engineer; if water is moving across a hard surface, that is our layer. The two get specified on the same job constantly.

Checking capacity: the outlet is the bottleneck, not the channel

Almost every “the drain is clogged” call we take on a plaza is really an outlet problem. Channel bodies have generous cross sections; the 2” stub glued on the end does not. Here is the arithmetic we use — smooth PVC flowing full at 1/8” per foot — close enough to catch a bad decision before it is poured.

Two things fall out of that table. Small channels are outlet-limited, not channel-limited: a Mini Channel run on one 2” outlet is worth about 18 gpm however long you make it, which is why we put outlets at both ends of a long run. And drawdown decides the pipe — that 5,980-gallon pool through 4” at ~110 gpm is about 55 minutes at full flow, realistically 90–120 minutes as the head drops; through 3” it is most of an afternoon. Check the discharge end too: gravity to a storm structure is best, a pop-up emitter suits modest flows, a dry well small volumes with nowhere to daylight — none swallows a 6,000-gallon drawdown, and many jurisdictions restrict discharging treated fountain water to storm at all.

Load class and grate openings on a plaza people cross barefoot

Fountain plazas read as pedestrian space and get treated as vehicle space twice a year: event load-in, a scissor lift for lighting, a vacuum truck at drawdown, a pickup on the pavers to swap a pump. That is the load that breaks a Class A grate.

  • Class A 15 (15 kN) — pedestrian only; fine for a private courtyard feature nothing can drive to, rarely right on public work.
  • Class B 125 (125 kN) — our floor for public plazas: maintenance carts, lifts, the occasional light truck.
  • Class C 250 (250 kN) — service vehicles crossing regularly, or a plaza edge on a delivery route.
  • Class D 400 (400 kN) — fire lanes and any plaza an engine can be routed across. Class E 600 and F 900 are industrial and airfield territory, not fountain work.

Trade shorthand maps Class C 250 and up onto H-20 duty (a 16,000 lb wheel load) and Class D 400 onto HS-25 (20,000 lb) — working heuristics between two test regimes, not an official cross-walk; where an engineer has stamped a requirement, meet the standard they named. Two pedestrian details matter more here than anywhere: ADA's rule for gratings — no opening that passes a 1/2” sphere, elongated slots perpendicular to travel — rules most wide-slot decorative patterns out of the main path, so put the pretty grate in the planted edge and the compliant one in the walkway; and dark metal in full sun runs easily 40–50 °F above air temperature, which matters where people arrive barefoot.

Where each product actually lands at a water feature

Linear channel goes at the coping edge — just outside the splash ring, catching drift before it reaches the walking surface and plaza runoff before it reaches the water. On rectangular pools and water walls that is usually the whole answer. Browse 0–1.99” and 2.00–3.99”.

Point drains take the low corners — and on a round fountain a ring of catch basins beats wrapping the circle in channel. Terminate runs into a basin rather than buried pipe: you get a cleanout, grit drops out, and it is where a 2” stub becomes the 4” pipe drawdown needs. 12” basins (12-3/8” square × 12-15/16” deep) cover most plaza work; 18” buys sediment storage and multiple pipe entries. Carry the finish through — 930B for a 9” basin at 8-7/8” square, 1230B for a 12” at 11-3/4” — and pick up adapters in basin outlets & fittings and drainage fittings.

Grates are architecture here, and the material deep-dive belongs to our grates sectionbrass, chrome, cast iron, ductile iron, decorative patterns. What is specific to this vertical: features strand pipe stubs, cleanouts, and overflow risers in the paving, and NDS round and square collar grates finish them — brass in 3”, 4”, 5”, and 6” satin or polished, chrome round only in 3” and 4” — check that before you promise a client a chrome plaza. In a bed use an atrium grate, whose dome keeps mulch from sealing the inlet, and set buried isolation valves in a valve box outside the splash ring.

Stegmeier Frontier & Flowmaster

The line that reads as a joint · coping edges & reflecting-pool surrounds

Frontier is 60” long, 1.7” wide, 3.23” deep — narrow enough beside a stone coping to read as a control joint rather than a drain. Permanent wet service is its native habitat, and its fittings are the most complete we stock for boxing a rectangle: 45° and 90° angles, a tee, a cross, couplers, down and side adapters. Flowmaster is the commercial sibling at a 4.75” × 60” top cap, for when the feature and its whole deck are one detail; on both, a scuffed cap is a swap rather than a demolition job. Trade-off: these are low-profile deck drains, not load-rated vehicular channels — keep them off the maintenance-vehicle route.

NDS Mini Channel + brass grates

The brass-trimmed splash line · hotel courtyards & entry water walls

The pick when the drain itself has to be beautiful. A 72” × 3-1/2” × 3-1/8” body with a 2” spigot end or bottom outlet, and the only retail line we carry with a true brass grate — 552B satin and 553PB polished, 12” sections at 2-13/16” wide. Cast iron in botanical (554CI) or wave (555CI) gives the same weight in a darker key; factory 45° and 90° elbows-with-grate wrap a rectangular basin. Standing advice: choose satin for anything in the splash — polished looks spectacular for about three weeks, then spots. The honest limit is that 2” outlet at roughly 18 gpm, so plan outlets at both ends or step into 4” pipe at a basin with the line's 2” × 4” reducer. Mini Channel FAQs · grates.

The paver-module surround · courtyards & tight stone borders

2-1/4” wide, 3-1/8” deep, in 36”, 72”, and 108” lengths with factory 45° and 90° angles, a tee, end-cap and bottom outlets, and anchor clips. Slim is what we reach for when Frontier is too subtle to catch real drift but Mini is wider than the paver module allows; its square and chain grate patterns hold their own next to cut stone. Buying note before you fall for the 9 ft sections: freight is brutal, so they carry a $2,500 minimum order or a warehouse pickup. NDS Spee-D Channel + decorative grates

The planted-surround line · garden features & pondless basins

For a feature in a bed rather than on a plaza, Spee-D is the right economics, and it solves what bites the narrow lines: it takes a factory 3” or 4” outlet — offset end, two-way 90°, or bottom — instead of topping out at a 2” stub. Fabricated 45°, 90°, tee, and cross fittings all come with grates, and the grate range is the widest we stock: standard 24” × 4-1/8”, botanical (252, 252CI in cast iron), wave (253/253CI). Cast iron botanical beside a stone basin is one of the best-looking inexpensive details in drainage. When the real job is 2,400 sq ft of plaza draining toward the fountain, stop pretending a splash line will handle it. When the feature is the reason the plaza exists, the drain arrives with a specification attached — and that is KlassikDrain territory. Fountains and landmarks are one of the applications ACO themselves publish for the line. K100/KS100 covers most plaza work, with K200 and K300 for larger catchments, and the KS variants add a stainless steel edge rail where constant wetting would chew a bare edge. Load classes run from pedestrian through heavy vehicular, so a fire-lane crossing and a pedestrian surround detail inside one family. Where our catalog stops — and who to call instead

Water features draw more “can you also supply…” questions than any vertical we sell into, so here is the boundary:

  • No pumps, recirculation, filtration, or treatment, and no in-basin plumbing — pump vaults, nozzles, weirs, UV or ozone, chemical feed, autofill assemblies, controls, lighting, the basin drain, the overflow standpipe, and the liner all belong to the feature package. We will not pretend a catch basin is a sump.
  • No curved or radius channel. A true radius body is a custom shop fabrication, and we will point you at a fabricator rather than sell you the wrong thing.
  • No subsurface french-drain systems.
  • Separators, interceptors, and discharge permitting are others' scope — sediment or oil separation ahead of your outfall is a civil item on someone else's submittal, and rules on releasing treated fountain water to storm vary by jurisdiction.

What size outlet pipe does a fountain surround need?

Size the outlet, not the channel. Flowing full at 1/8 inch per foot, smooth PVC carries roughly 8 gpm in 1.5 inch, 18 gpm in 2 inch, 50 gpm in 3 inch, 110 gpm in 4 inch and 330 gpm in 6 inch. A 60 by 40 foot plaza is 2,400 square feet, which sheds about 23 gpm in a 1 inch per hour rain and about 94 gpm in a 4 inch per hour cloudburst. That plaza wants a 4 inch outlet even though a 2 inch stub fits the channel.

How long does it take to drain a reflecting pool for cleaning?

A 40 by 20 foot pool held 12 inches deep is 800 cubic feet, about 5,980 gallons. Through a 4 inch gravity line at 1/8 inch per foot, roughly 110 gpm flowing full, that is about 55 minutes in theory and closer to 90 to 120 minutes in practice, because flow falls off as the head drops. Drawdown, not rainfall, is usually what pushes the outlet up a pipe size.

Can I get a channel drain that curves around a circular fountain?

Not from us. Everything we stock is straight run, and a true radius body is a custom shop fabrication. What works instead is chording the circle with short straight sections joined by factory 45 degree fittings, which the Micro, Mini, Slim, Spee-D and Frontier lines all offer. On a large circle, a ring of catch basins at the low spots installs cheaper and services far easier than a continuous curve.

Do brass and chrome grates hold up in constant splash?

They hold up, but they change. Polished brass and polished chrome dull and spot within weeks in treated water, and brass drifts toward a brown patina most owners end up liking. Satin hides that far better, so we steer specifiers to satin anywhere in the splash line. Our brass channel grate is the 12 inch Mini Channel section at 2-13/16 inches wide, brass basin grates are 8-7/8 and 11-3/4 inches square, and chrome in our catalog is round pipe-collar grates in 3 and 4 inch only.

What load class does a fountain plaza need?

Class A 15, at 15 kN, is pedestrian only and rarely enough on public work. We spec Class B 125, at 125 kN, as the floor anywhere a maintenance cart, scissor lift or event truck can reach; Class C 250 where service vehicles cross regularly; and Class D 400, at 400 kN, if the plaza doubles as a fire lane. Grate openings on the walking route also have to satisfy the ADA rule for gratings: no opening that passes a half inch sphere, with elongated slots perpendicular to the direction of travel.
